Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
With increasing awareness of how social injustice and systemic racism impact our clinical practices, Department of Plastic and Oral Surgery has implemented a multi-pronged anti-racism strategy to address these issues and design solutions for sustainable change. In June 2020, we established a Steering Committee for Justice, Equity, and Inclusion to spearhead anti-racism initiatives both at the patient/provider level and at the employee level. Representatives from all department disciplines (Leadership, Research, Admin, Clinical) comprise the Steering Committee and subcommittees and have worked together to formalize their goals.
The Steering Committee recognizes that the process of engaging with anti-racism must be ongoing. Through our work, we have learned that knowledge and skills gaps often prevent people from speaking out against discrimination. We are cultivating a culture around equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) that is supportive and engaging, yet challenges our staff to undertake the hard internal work required to dismantle racism. By providing tools, resources, and space for these efforts, our Department will continue to learn, grow, and take action.
