Clinical Experience as a Surgical Fellow
The goal of the one-year surgical Fellowships at Boston Children's Hospital is to teach fellows how to think about craniofacial anomalies. You will learn to recognize craniofacial anomalies, to conceptualize and complete corrective procedures, and to evaluate outcomes. You will gain skills across the entire care experience through participating in pre- and postnatal diagnosis, planning, execution, and post-operative follow-up and analysis of patients with major craniofacial anomalies and cleft lip/palate. Exposure to pediatric operations—including cleft lip and palate, major craniofacial malformations, vascular anomalies, and dentofacial deformities—is standard in our fellowship experience.
Fellows spend most of their time working with faculty members in both inpatient and outpatient settings and become an integral part of the department. Fellows have a major role in caring for patients; they learn about and conduct patient assessments, pre-operative evaluations, post-operative management, and outpatient care plans.
Fellows assume increasing responsibility and are expected to know the preoperative plan, pertinent anatomy, and postoperative care plan for each patient. With a robust team of residents, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to help with administrative components of patient care, the Fellowship year is distinct from the residency experience and focuses on gaining additional higher-level knowledge and leadership experience.
